Cutie is TEN!!!

I know I say this every time I post a birthday milestone post, but... how did this happen?

Cutie entered the world a peaceful, content, observant soul. Her birth was my most ideal of the four. My favorite midwife who had also delivered Precious was on duty, and it wasn't my first natural birth, so I didn't run to the bathroom when it was time to push. I had also internalized many principles of the Sears' The Birth Book, which is a tremendous resource.

It's hard to describe all of the unique markers of Cutie's personality. She is a quiet companion, but she freely speaks her mind. She is a girly-girl who loves looking fabulous, but she can cast a rod, catch fish and clean them any day of the week. She's intensely loyal, but she has a mischievous streak that makes her tease people and get a rise out of them. A typical middle child, she understands situations from many angles and perceives how to avoid behaviors that get her siblings in trouble. I can always depend on Cutie for a hug, and she is so fun to be around!

Cutie loves animals. We started keeping chickens shortly after she turned a year old. When she was two, we acquired Rosie, our great Pyrenees dog. As you saw in the last blog post, she currently keeps a guinea pig. For her fifth birthday, her present was a pony ride. Now that she and Precious are in horseback riding lessons, they enjoy caring for the horses every bit as much as they enjoy riding them. Whenever we visit friends, you can usually find her hanging out with their pets. Cutie has an innate understanding for animals' needs and delights in making them happy.

One of our all-time favorite videos of Cutie is "Daddy, you say yes and I say no!"

A few months before Cutie turned three, she was climbing capriciously on a metal bench on the USS North Carolina. She slipped and banged her mouth on the metal, and I ran her with a bleeding mouth a good distance to the bathroom. The tooth went back into place well enough, but she developed a gum boil above it. The dentist recommended an extraction, so she went three years without a top right front tooth. But now that her adult teeth have grown in, she has a gorgeous smile!
