What we've been up to lately

Home improvements
In March, we used our tax return money to install a heat pump and duct work in the basement.  This is working towards our goal of finishing the basement so that we can use the front room as a school/play room and the back room as a guest bedroom/office.  New Daddy still wants to run Cat 5 cable so we can have internet throughout the house; and that's what we're waiting on before drywall goes up.

In early April, we took an early 10th anniversary stay-cation.  During this time, one of our goals was to find some dining room chairs, but we weren't actively pursuing this goal outside of Craigslist and wishful thinking on Pottery Barn's website.  But when we were in Target buying some toys for the kids, we happened to notice some chairs that were on clearance for $35 each.  Between two Target stores that were only 10 minutes apart, we were able to get all eight chairs!  God really blessed us with that surprise!  The table that my grandad made us eight years ago finally has matching chairs.

Also in the dining room, I should mention that Poppy and New Daddy installed a storm door with a retractable screen going out to the deck.  It has enabled us to enjoy the cooler spring days with some fresh air flowing through the house!  Very, very nice.

Animals
We got 20 Australorp chicks in mid-March.  When I discovered mold (from them tipping over their water) on the bottom of their cardboard home, I moved them outside a few days shy of the 6-week mark.  We put them in the new PVC tractor outside with the two Silkies and gave our former Silkie tractor to a friend who is just getting started with chickens.  The little Aussies are already getting used to their roosts; each evening, I discover more of them trying it out.

We're doing intensive, daily chicken training with Rosie to keep her from chasing the chickens, especially this new batch.  Four chicks got out yesterday, and she gave them a good chase and some "loving," but didn't kill any.  She spent the rest of the day attached to their tractor, per Mr. Harris' advice on training Great Pyrenees' to be LGDs.  I've also joined the yahoo LGD group in hopes of getting more training tips.  Apparently, we need all the help we can get.  Fact: a Livestock Guardian should never even acknowledge or look its charges in the eye.  This was news to me; we have a lot of work to do.

Garden
We laid out the garden similarly to last year, only rotating beans and tomatoes, etc.  I've posted a full list over on my garden blog.  Today is a good planting day, so I expect we'll finish seeding squash, beans, okra, and cucumbers this evening.

That's all I have time for right now... until next time!
