It's staph season...

A few days ago, I looked at Precious' trunk and saw small red dots. Last week, I had told her to take off her wet bathing suit immediately, but she played in her wet swimsuit, instead. I am a distracted mama and didn't follow up. The dots were staph. But this mama has learned that you don't mess around with staph. After last year's incidents, I've been especially diligent with Bubby and Cutie's swimsuits. They are fine.

But Precious. Yesterday, I dotted her with tea tree oil, then applied the prescription, topical antibiotic ointment. After her epsom salt soak, she had to go "lightly clothed" around the house yesterday. This morning, the bumps are reduced. It's working! She's taking another epsom bath right now, and after that, more ointment.

The swimsuits- all of them- were washed in water mixed with silver solution, and are still hanging on the clothesline from yesterday. Let the sun bake that nasty bacteria off of them, thank you.

My sister and I were musing over the whole recurrence of staph in my household, and MRSAs worldwide. You just never heard of people getting staph infections when we were young. We ran around in wet bathing suits all day long and didn't get rashes. What's going on, eh?

Here's a pretty interesting article about our obsession with anti-bacterial everything (including soap), and the surge in bacteria. Anti-bacterial kills the bad and the good. Perhaps we should leave the "anti" stuff alone, keep our hands washed with old-fashioned, home-crafted soap, and let the good guys fight the bad guys the way they've always done?

Thesoapguy.com has great prices on old-fashioned soap blocks!
