When things don't go as planned

We had planned to attend the monthly communion service this evening. We wanted to leave the house as soon as everyone was showered and ready (I also had to give Bubby a haircut) and take our time on the 2+ hour trip. But when I exited the shower, I knew I needed to start the dishwasher before we left, or we would be coming home at 10 PM to zero clean silverware (company two days in a row!) and with no energy to load them. So I delayed our leaving by doing the dishes. We finally started our trip around noon.

As we reached the interstate, rain started and traffic became snarly. No problem- we had plenty of time. Bubby and Cutie have been interested in tiny homes lately, so we were thinking about visiting the tiny home festival, which happened to be about 25 minutes away from church, and on the way. As the rain worsened and traffic slowed due to an accident on a different interstate, we realized that the tiny home festival was probably going to be rained out.

At first, we took the exit to bypass some of the traffic, but there was a Starbucks, and New Daddy wanted to do something nice for the kids since the tiny home-thing wasn't going to work out. We broke our Starbucks boycott to pick up cake pops for the kids, plus coffee for whoever wanted it. I, who never order coffee, even enjoyed a tall white chocolate something with the flavoring cut in half. This way, the sweetener was perfect, instead of syrup. Bubby didn't get the coffee-for-all memo, so New Daddy parked after the drive thru and went in with Bubby to pick out his coffee.

While they were inside, we had paused our tape (60-1211M- so wonderful!), so I pulled up facebook for a minute. I scrolled across a tornado warning for the area we were headed to. When New Daddy and Bubby returned to the car, I mentioned the warning to him. He drove past the ramp, wondering what to do. As we pulled into another strip of shops, I saw that I had received an email two minutes ago: service cancelled tonight because of the tornado warnings. We turned back around, and traffic was a bit better heading north.

We decided to eat at a favorite sushi restaurant- where the food comes to you on a conveyor belt. But it took, like 10 minutes to even get our water! Service was infernally slow (at least the food was automatic!); we finally received our check and headed home. The rain was torrential, and the resulting traffic crawled in places. New Daddy was our driving hero for dealing with the traffic and the rain.

As we were on the final highway before our turn, we passed a spinout that had just happened a few minutes ago. There were 5 untouched cars (probably helping) on the side of the road and one dented one down in the median. We slowed down for this event and arrived safely home a few minutes later.

So... once again, we realized that our steps were perfectly ordered. What if we had left on time and had already been in town when they had to cancel the service? What if we had been at the tiny house festival when a tornado touched down three minutes away? What if the restaurant had had prompt service and we had been involved in the aftermath of the spinout?

Just another reminder... when it looks like things are way off course, those are the clouds that are actually angels' wings... blessings from God.
