And *this* October, it's...

... Finishing the downstairs bathroom!

In October of 2017, there were the kitchen countertops. This fall, we had several home improvement projects to choose from (these are endless, right?), but a downstairs bathroom took precedence. For a family of six, these things become necessary. Also, when we have guests, we've been wanting them to not to have to climb the stairs to go to the bathroom. So there was that.

New Daddy had some extra vacation days to use up this fall, and this is what he's accomplished over the last week or so:

  • 28" pocket door, since it's in a tight corner... This involved taking out several studs and reframing the door/header. Lots of sawing and house-vibrating, measuring and re-measuring. New Daddy always makes these things happen with great accuracy, and I am always amazed when he's finished.
  • Re-plumbing the water heater with PEX pipes. The water heater and front faucet were still waiting on their "gray pipe" (polybutylene) replacement from 2011, when we re-routed the water line entrance to the back of the unfinished basement and New Daddy replaced most of the gray pipes. New Daddy is a huge fan of PEX. It's easy to install, and we've never had a pipe burst from freezing.

The plan is to install a rain shower head from the ceiling and a hand-held wand, zero-entry tile with glass walls (does this remind anyone of a certain place in... say, Indiana?). The goal is to make it very accessible, as well as open-feeling. The bathroom plumbing is stubbed out, but this is going to require some concrete busting and nasty pipe-uncapping... more of a grit-your-teeth-and-do-it affair.

My only request is a stainless steel laundry sink for soaking things. Not sure what the "look" for this bathroom is destined to be, but it will be pretty modern. We're still trying to figure out the dropped ceiling, since the plumbing hub sits above this bathroom, and we truly despise dropped ceilings (memories of a roach habitat in our former house). These panels don't look too gross, and we can probably slip some critter poison up there...

I have to keep reminding myself that we are a fair distance from any of the finishing touches right now. This is more of a brainstorming, pinterest-y post than a finished product post, but that's where we are right now.

The younger two kiddos finished up week 12 of CC on Monday, and the older two have three more weeks. I'm really pleased with everyone's work this semester, and breaks are in sight!
