Our day in heaven on earth

We realized, too late last year, that we'd not spent a day at Lake Tugalo.  So as soon as warm weather hit, New Daddy took a day off, and we headed to this amazing spot on earth.

As the kids and I got out of the [ever-smaller, thanks to our growing family] gravy boat to wade around a bit while New Daddy fished a cove, I realized that all of the things missing from our lives at that point were things we didn't really enjoy.  But the one thing that we all need was in plentiful supply there- God and his creation.  I can't describe to you how smelling the pine forests makes me feel.  Refreshed would be a start.

By the time we made it to the rope swing, the wind had picked up, and it was starting to rain.  Nevertheless, New Daddy still climbed up to the rope swing- which had some improvements since our last visit, and made his symbolic launch into the lake, whooping included.

Then, it was a seemingly-endless thirty minutes tooling back to the landing in the rain (those ponchos had looked really nice but hadn't made it into the boat).  By the time we reached the landing, everyone was wet and bordering miserable.  But even "miserable" on Lake Tugalo is comparable to bliss anywhere else.  It's a gorgeous lake, even in the chilling rain.  As we made it back to the landing, the rain had lessened to the point that we could be outside without getting drenched.  In retrospect, it probably would have been best to just wait out the rain under a cover of trees, instead of trying to hightail it to the landing in the rain.  But we didn't know how long the rain was going to last, and it was getting close to evening.

Everyone took turns changing into dry clothing in the car.  Then, I turned on the car and let the kids watch dvds while New Daddy fished some more.  Bubby caught a newt that he had spied earlier and had a great time playing with it.  Thankfully, it was still alive when he released it.

New Daddy dropped us off at the landing at went fishing again as the rain diminished.  When he got back to the landing, he showed us several huge bluegill and a nice-sized bass.  He said it was probably the best fishing day he'd had in the history of his fishing career.  Pretty much every cast was a strike.  That made it an especially rewarding day for him.  The kids enjoyed reeling in the fish, and Cutie was especially expert at depositing them into the live well.  Tater cautiously touched the fish.

Lastly, we went out for an early Mothers Day dinner at a nice restaurant in Clayton.  Thankfully, everyone's dry clothes had been planned for a sit-down meal, so we didn't look like total bumpkins.  It was a nice way to end our adventurous day.
