A ramblicious post on Lacto-fermentation

I've been buying Bubbies sauerkraut and pickles from my local health food stores for the past year or so. We love Bubbies. But Bubbies is pricey. When I told a fellow-WAPF friend that I bought sauerkraut regularly, she looked at me in disbelief. "But it's so easy to make!" That got me thinking... okay, maybe ? Recently, my mama handed me some pickle-sized cucumbers from her garden, and I bought eight pounds of okra at my local farm. Thus, I've decided to try my hand at traditional preservation, or lacto-fermentation. I fermented some radishes earlier in the season (on the left, above). When they were fresh, the flavor was good, but not as developed as it is three months later. A few days ago, we re-opened the jar; the kids love them now! Random pre-Christmas post

I'm not sure how this happened. Somewhere between the blur of photo projects, never-ending school, decluttering, and keeping sibling fighting at a minimum, time passed, and another holiday season is upon us! The sweets from the Halloween season messed up my system, so I put myself back on GAPS for about a month. Things have straightened out, my face is a tad thinner (you never know how bloated you were unless you get rid of it!), and I feel more "with it" mentally. I love how GAPS is there when I need it. Now, I'm sporadically eating non-GAPS foods, but it's minimal. I need to make broth right now. The Instant Pot is a wonderful broth-making implement. Dishes are on a new system. Even-birthday kids do dishes on even days, vice versa for odd. We lucked out with two kids on dishes each day. That puts Precious and Tater together on dishes, which means, yes, Precious mostly does dishes on her days. Tater does help unload! This system is easing my housework load co

First summer post

Nine days after my last post that included my grandmother's 95th birthday, this amazingly long and well-lived lady passed away. We had her birthday party at the beginning of June, a week later she fell and cracked some ribs, and a week after that, she went home. Now that's the way to do it. Her memorial service was on Tater's birthday. Here was an adorable video of her birthday song- watch to the end! Could she have been be any more precious? We're thankful for her legacy and peaceful departure. I had the privilege of playing piano for her funeral. We had sung "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms" as the opening hymn of my grandad's funeral 7.5 years ago , and I thought it would be fitting to play it as the exiting hymn for my grandmother's. We just finished an incredible road trip that really wiped us out! We dropped off Precious for her second year of Still Waters Camp and arrived home around 10:30 PM last night. Bro.
