Mid-winter update

Things are clipping along nicely. We're in the sort-of mid-winter lull before the craziness of spring recitals, field trips... March is coming.

As I write, New Daddy is at district honor band with Bubby, who earned one of two bassoon spots in the district. He was also the 3rd or 4th rated bassoonist for all state. Not too shabby for someone who acquired the instrument one year before the tryout. Piano and other wind instruments, and his intense level of focus definitely contributed. At his teacher's urging (insistence?), he's auditioning for a youth orchestra this spring. My mom reminded me the other day that this all sounds a bit familiar to her...

New Daddy, on the other hand, marched up to the mountains with his Xero running shoes, a fishing pole, and a laptop. DHB has become his mid-winter, sanity-saving vacation. Except that he fell into the lake last year, hehe. The bank is very steep. It was still fun, and with a story to boot! I love to admire his fishing adventures from afar, lol.

At Christmas, we day-tripped with New Daddy's family to Charleston, took photos in front of the 450 year-old Angel Oak, ate some yummy seafood, and drove through the James Island County Park lights. A fun jaunt, and great memories were made.

For New Year's, we took a short trip to our favorite farm, White Oak Pastures. We booked a trail ride for the three older children for Cutie's birthday and stayed overnight in the Pond House. This is one of our favorite short vacations to take. We had originally planned to spend a few days camping in the Florida panhandle, but the rainy forecast changed our plans. Instead, we fished the pond, set trot lines with our Aldi dry salami (the one catfish got away), and watched the kids have a blast casting for bass and kayaking. The pond was muddy from the rain, so they didn't bring anything in. The serene quiet and limited internet access were such a blessing. We tacked on a quick trip to the Kolomoki Mounds before heading home.

The farm store / restaurant is such a cool place! And yes, Bubby passed me by this fall, and he just passed Precious this week! I'm pretty sure he grows two inches taller every day.

Kolomoki panorama selfie- New Daddy enjoyed photo bombing our adventurous look!

We're beginning a school break, and the kids have finished their work for the week. We're actually going to not do school for a week! The plan is to [continue to] declutter the house and make as many random trips to Goodwill as we need to. Hopefully, we can squeeze some park days in, too. New Daddy put up an ATV shelter next to the patio outside so we can get the lawn mower out of the garage and hopefully reclaim that space. It is a blessing to have a small house for six people- we are forced to get rid of stuff! That's the plan next week.

I hope everyone stays happy and healthy! Y'all stay on top of those Vitamin D drops and your elderberry syrup!

My husband and I spent two weeks in Charleston, Hilton Head, and Savannah a few years ago. It was such a fun trip! I loved the angel oak. Your kids are sure growing up. Chris Williams
