Car Entertainment

A few months back, the DVD player somehow got removed from the car.  I think it started with kids flipping it around like a whirligig.  After it fell down a few times, I decided that the car was not the best home for this electronic device.  Plus that, we were starting school, and it comes in handy for our Math-U-See lessons.  My kids love Mr. Demme.

I digress.

So we've been in a bit of wilderness of ideas for car entertainment.  But a few weeks ago, Mimi gifted us with some flat-lying, paperback science information books that Bubby just loves.  They fit perfectly into the back pockets of the seats without sticking out too much.  They have a few (but only a few) animals that he hasn't heard of, but it's still fun for him to read to himself facts about the animals he already knows about.  These books are great!

Another thing we do in the car is play CDs.  We love Greathall Productions, AKA Jim Weiss.  My kids could listen to "Things Could Always Be Worse" a hundred times and still laugh at their favorite parts.  We also play our Classical Conversations memory work- especially if we're out on Fridays, and I'm getting ready to tutor the next week while I drive.

Precious has also discovered and shared tic-tac-toe with her siblings, they enjoy spotting the ABCs in order on license plates, and they also enjoy "I Spy."  We also have the iStoryBooks app for the Kindle Fire, which reads to the kids.  And since the Kindle isn't car-mounted (yet), the kids tend to take better care of it.

What sorts of "old-fashioned" (okay, pre-DVD) entertainment do you use in the car?
