House & car

Well, the house is finally, completely re-sided in cement fiber. Our painting guy is caulking and spraying down the siding with a bleach solution to take care of the mildew that developed while the siding was sitting on the concrete pad under our deck. Any day now, our home will be completely the same color.

Rainbow is gone. Precious had a brilliant idea to sell him at my mother's hugely successful yard sale last week. He was in the yard for all of thirty minutes before a three year-old fell in love with him, and his mother bought our Rainbow. Cutie looked confused when they put her "thick-a-thick-a" into their box; afterward, Precious cried.

But, alas, we survived the ordeal, and Mr. Tableson enjoys being the rooster once again. We're also hoping that the ladies will start laying eggs again, now that things are a little less stressful around the coop. Mrs. Tableson has been brooding for almost a month now, and Mrs. Rumphius finally came out of hiding two weeks ago. No eggs from either of them yet. Honey doesn't seem quite ready to start producing, either. Their one redeeming quality is that they are very nice pets and wouldn't peck anything larger than a flea, besides each other.

Our garden has taken off, and we're trying to hang on. We got supports on the tomatoes just in time. I need to hoe weeds and put down more weed fabric. We're harvesting radishes, but still ending up with a few that got just a tad too big. The kids are loving the whole garden-thing. Bubby enjoys moving the watering hose, which turns out to be an exercise in leveling plants.

We had the van's transmission rebuilt last week. It was losing torque on long trips, plus a "check engine" code... and we finally took it in. Turns out, if I'd been changing the fluid every 15,000 miles (according to our trustworthy mechanic), we could have made the transmission last at least another 50,000 miles. You can bet I'll be having the fluid changed on the rebuilt version. I'm thankful to have wheels again and trying to remind myself that it's cheaper than a down payment on a new car. In the long term, it's also cheaper than a car payment every month.

That's about it for now... when something else happens, I'll probably blog about that, too.
