Raw milk update

There are two great newses on the raw milk front.

First of all, the North Carolina House has passed a "disapproval bill," HB 2524, against the rule to dye raw milk gray. In Georgia, this crazy notion didn't even get past our local WAP group's protests. It has been a little harder battle in North Carolina, but things are definitely looking better there. Now, it just needs to go through the Senate, and then folks in NC will be buying labeled "pet milk," just like us Georgia folks. But, at least it will be naturally colored pet milk.

California has especially great news. The "The Fresh Raw Milk Act of 2008," SB 201, which revokes the unattainable 10 coliform-per-mL law, has passed the Agriculture and Health committees, with no opposing votes. It will now be presented on the Senate floor. Organic Pastures Dairy states that this bill may very well be the landmark bill that becomes the standard for the rest of the country. It seems to appease both sides of this debate. It requires an attainable coliform limit, which makes the regulators happy; and, the limit is attainable, which makes the farmers happy. It also allows for more frequent testing, which is perfectly fine for a clean operation, and good for customers, too. No doubt, it keeps regulators happy, also.

Perhaps the "top health issue of 2008" is turning in our favor!
